Reptiles are easy to take care for with the least amount of cleaning. You can even miss a feeding once in a while and not stress about it. In nature, reptiles do not typically get to eat continually and they have to be much busier in obtaining their food than they do in captivity. Becoming fat can really become an issue if they are fed on a daily basis.
Reading up on the species you desire is absolutely essential. You can never know too much about your pets. Speaking with people who have really kept reptiles is usually extremely helpful- typically more so than most books. There are reptile clubs in every region, all over the world, so you should be able to locate one close to you.

- Will it be housed in a group or individually?

- What type of food does it ingest?

- Learn as much as you can about different reptiles to be sure you get a reptile that will fit you and your lifestyle.
- Most reptiles fall into one of three categories: handleable, semi-handleable, and visual. You should decide which type you are interested in before you buy.
- If you know as much as you can about the reptile you are getting, you will then know what to expect.
- Be prepared to deal with the feeding and cleaning requirements.
- Check on your reptile daily. That way, you will know if anything needs to be fixed or changed.

Things you shouldn't do:
- Never let your reptiles get cold.
- You should never leave any windows or doors open unless you are absolutely sure your reptile won't take off.
- Always make sure it is safe before letting your reptile out of its cage.
- If you have an amphibian, never handle it with dry hands because it could damage its skin.
